Resumen
The objective of this study was to identify the effect of a strength training program on the functionality and quality of life in women between 55 and 70 years old in the city of Bogotá since this age group is characterized by other stages of life by the physiological changes that occur in it like sarcopenia and osteoporosis. This is usually results of habits already rooted in each one of them, which carries consequences such as the greater risk to suffer from diseases, functionality, and decrease in the quality of life. Strength training is a good alternative to promote physical exercise and put aside the sedentary culture. This practice will reduce the levels of dependency in a high percentage and in turn, will improve the quality of life of the older adult.
The research was performed with 27 women between the ages of 55 and 70 who were part of a strength training program that lasted twelve weeks with a weekly volume of three sessions (one in directed gym machines and two in the pool) and with duration of one hour each. The intensity of the sessions increased progressively, starting at 40% and ending at 70% during the program period. The 1RM test was performed on the 45 ° press, resistance force, the functional autonomy protocol (GDLAM) and the quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) before the intervention and was performed again after of this.
We found improvements in strength by increasing the weight in 45 ° press and the number of repetitions in the strength test, also the GDLAM protocol showed a decrease in terms of time in each of its batteries and the GDLAM (IG) at the end of the intervention and in the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire there were significant differences (p <0.05) in most questions including the four domains for which it is composed presenting an improvement in quality of life. Based on these results, it is concluded that strength training in the elderly improves strength, functionality, and quality of life.
