Resumen
In common dental procedures, such as the extraction of third molars, in order to give better results to certain treatments. Increased corticosteroid uses by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, using drug therapy as pre or post extraction, drugs such as dexamethasone in order to counteract adverse effects during and after surgery. Objective: Detailed analysis of the frequency of use of dexamethasone by the oral surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons, in post extraction treatment to reduce the sequelae of surgical procedures. Methodology: An observational descriptive study, cross-sectional, in which 38 surveys applied in oral and / or maxillofacial surgeons belonging to Colombian society of maxillofacial surgery (ACCOMF) was performed was executed; sociodemographic, route of administration, presentation of the drug, dose and frequency of use of dexamethasone were evaluated. The data were processed in the program STATA 14 using measures of central tendency and dispersion, standard deviation (SD) depending on the distribution of the data given by Shapiro Willk test. Results: The average age was 38 ± years. Of which 20 (52.63%) were female and 18 (47.37) male, located in different cities of Colombia. The frequency of use of dexamethasone according to studies in dentistry was that 15.8% no dexamethasone used at any time. 68.4% of oral or maxillofacial surgeons use the low frequency dexamethasone, 13.2% used the medium frequency dexamethasone 2.6% with high frequency and none systematically used in all procedures. According variables use participants use dexamethasone intramuscularly being vials 38 (100.00) presentation only used during these procedures with a maximum dose of 8 mg / day. use a frequency of 1 to 3 out of 10 reported surgical procedures. Conclusions: Use of corticosteroids has a low frequency of use as drug therapy in post-surgical dental treatment in Colombia, with a predilection for intramuscular presentation being used vials with a maximum dose of 8 mg / day.
