Resumen
The hand pieces used in dentistry are considered as a potential transmitter of diseases but because they have delicate machinery, biosafety protocols are not complied. Objective. The aim of this study was determinate the level of the knowledge, practice, and attitude about biosecurity in dental handpieces by dentistry students of Universidad Santo Tomás. Materials and Methods. The method to carry out this study was cross-sectional using a questionnaire-type evaluation instrument, consisting of 20 questions, was addressed to 165 dental students at the Santo Tomas University from sixth to tenth semester and they were observed anonymously to evaluate their knowledge, practices and attitudes in front of the biosecurity measures of hand pieces of dental use during their work in the clinic. Their levels of knowledge, practices and attitudes were classified as low, medium and high. The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used for qualitative variables. Results. 51.5% of the students obtained a low level of knowledge, 46.1% low level of attitudes and 80.1% low level of practices, however, for the total score 66.1% obtained medium level. In addition, it was determined that women and students of sixth and tenth semester obtained better performance in the total score. Conclusions. In general, the level of knowledge, attitude and practice had a mainly low performance, however, for the total CAP the majority was located at a medium level.
