Resumen
This book arose from the need to have a guide for the elective course "Mobile Communications" of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of the University of Santo Tomas. Although there is a lot of literature on the subject, and the Internet abounds with articles, we did not find any that adapted to the needs of the course; even more so if we take into account that, due to the variety of approaches, some articles seem to contradict others. However, the information contained in this book was mainly extracted from Internet articles that are referenced at the end; in this regard, it should be noted that information on the Internet is dynamic and constantly changing. Some of the author's own experiences, who has had access to mobile technologies, are also included. The engineer has the imperative need to know the latest technologies, and the telecommunications area is in constant evolution. In the last ten years, what has evolved most in telecommunications are mobile networks and the Internet, and the convergence of these two technologies has finally arrived. Equipment manufacturers have skillfully introduced new technologies as an evolution of older technologies, so that mobile network operators have not had to make a total investment each time a new technology appears. It is expected that this same philosophy will continue to be applied with future technologies; a necessary strategy for the manufacturer to protect its installed base and prevent competition from taking over the market. Mobile standards define open interfaces to promote free competition and allow different manufacturers to interconnect their equipment, but they do not define the details, which shows marked contrasts in innovation, research and development among the different manufacturers. Currently, manufacturers are focused on reducing costs, since the market is preferring low costs over product quality. This has allowed mobile operators to reach remote and sparsely populated areas, and the tariffs offered in some plans have been reduced sufficiently to be accessible to any social level.
