Resumen
Introduction: Physical inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle are directly related to obesity and overweight problems; moreover, these issues are also becoming a present and future health problem by creating unhealthy lifestyle habits associated with chronic noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension among others.
Objective: To determine the levels of physical activity and the profile of body composition in school-aged infants between the ages of 8 and 11 in the municipality of Toledo, Norte de Santander, Colombia.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 184 school children with 9.6 ± 1 years; 51% girls whose height, weight, BMI and physical activity levels were assessed through the Physical Activity Questionnaire - Boys (PAQ-C).
Results: The children who were evaluated have a tendency to a sedentary lifestyle of (PAQ-C = <3/5), men were more active during break time than in activities before and after lunch. Among the activities that an infant develops in the free time, the girls were more active in skating, dancing and skateboarding; and men in soccer and biking.
Conclusion:The physical activity carried out by schoolchildren seems to be insufficient and the context where infants exercise the most is in physical education classes, which calls for the importance to develop intervention strategies both in the school and in extracurricular contexts.
