Resumen
In this report, the author describes an action research study that took place at a primary school in San Andrés island, Colombia. The study aimed at exploring the impact of using ESA lesson sequence over student engagement in a fifth grade. The author designed and carried out a pedagogical intervention. The data collection instruments that were used were a needs analysis survey, a diagnostic test, teacher’s journals and an interview. Data were analyzed through process coding. The findings of the study were organized in two categories: engagement regarding the author’s teaching, and engagement regarding ESA. Findings show the teacher’s emphasis on affective and behavior engagement, a transition from a focus on form to a focus on function, and the recognition of self-reflection processes regarding course planning and classroom management.
