Objective: To design a cleaning and disinfection protocol for rigid gas permeable contact lenses for the clinics of the Santo Tomás University, as reported in the literature in the last 20 years. Methodology: The present work consists of a secondary quantitative observational study in order to carry out a systematic review of the literature on cleaning and disinfection methods for rigid gas permeable contact lenses according to the bibliometric variables (year of publication, language and type). of study) and themes (cleaning, disinfection, rigid gas permeable contact lens materials, solutions, deposits, microorganisms) according to the documents recovered. Results: A sample of 8 articles was formed that met the selection criteria, with an antiquity that did not exceed 10 years (2011-2021), 87.5% were published in English, regarding this corpus, United Kingdom It was the country that registered the most publications with 50% of publications during the year 2020. Conclusion: In relation to the cleaning and disinfection systems identified, the most effective method for microbial reduction in rigid gas permeable contact lenses is hydrogen peroxide, as reported in the literature reviewed. In addition, the review noted that povidone-iodine functions as an adjunct in the cleaning and disinfection of rigid gas permeable contact lenses to remove acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts.
