The unburned coal are the product of the incomplete combustion of coal. Normally it has a greater particle size than the mineral material, which allows its separation in high percentages to be implemented in the construction industry. Its formation can be attributed to malfunction of the combustion process of the thermoelectric plants, they affect the mechanical properties of concrete, mainly the resistance to compression, when they are used as concrete aggregates by means of the fly ash. This article eaims to evaluate the use of unburned coal present in the fly ashes and identify the different separation methods for their implementation in the preparation of concretes. The bibliographic review, construction of the theoretical framework, method classification and implementation analysis in Colombia were carried out. As a final result, the method of separating the unburnt present in the fly ash is determined, which allows the unburned material to be correctly separated by means of the most appropriate mesh, to
obtain the highest percentage of removal of the material. The use and uses of fly ashes in the creation of new materials for construction contribute to a healthier environment by reducing environmental pollution, in the same way, a double benefit is generated when separating it, since it allows the reuse of the unburned coal as fuel.
