Resumen
The struggle of women to be part of the labor market has generated positive effects on their lives. In some cases, women improve their social status in terms of deciding on their productive and reproductive roles. However, this market has also hampered female escalation by limiting access to management, strategic or decision-making positions, as if there would be an invisible barrier known as the glass ceiling effect.
This article takes a closer look on the conceptualization and public policies regarding women rights, in order to understand gender discrimination dynamics in some countries of Latin America. One of the main findings, suggest that occupational and wage discrimination towards women perpetuate segregation caused by social prejudices determined by sexual division of labor, since the educational level and experience are not the only causes of stagnation for this gender. This scenario indicates that markets are working without equity.
Keywords: glass ceiling, labor market, sexual division of the work, public policies.
