Lead isotopes are used to define pollution sources in the environment. Pb concentrations and ratios 206Pb / 207Pb, 206Pb / 204Pb, 207Pb / 204Pb and 208Pb / 206Pb were analyzed in samples from horizons A, B and C of 7 soils and sediments from the Lenguazaque River basin. In Lenguazaque, coal mining and coke production activities are carried out and the impact can be observerd throughout the entire territory. The present work is the first analysis of Pb isotopes to be carried out in Lenguazaque with the objectives of (i) distinguishing between anthropogenic and natural origin of lead, (ii) determining the distribution of Pb isotopes in sediments and soil horizons and (iii) evaluating contamination from coal extraction and coking. The isotopes of Pb in the samples of soils and sediments of Lenguazaque were characterized as more radiogenic than those present in the crust with values of the ratio 206Pb /207Pb between 1,207 and 1,289 indicating a mainly an anthropic origin of the metal. Two main sources of contamination were identified. The main source of contamination is the fly coal ash produced by the coking process. The 206Pb / 207Pb and 208Pb / 206Pb ratios of the fly coal ash are from 1.21 to 1.25 and from 1.96 to 2.04 respectively. Leaded gasoline was identified as another possible source of contamination with values of the 206Pb / 207Pb ratio between 1,205 and 1,210 in heavy traffic area. In conclusion the main source of Pb is from cocking activity, followed by the impact of heavy traffic.
