Aumentar los niveles de actividad física (AF) es una responsabilidad en salud pública no sólo porque con ello se disminuye el desarrollo de hipertensión, obesidad, dislipidemia y diabetes, los principales factores de riesgo para las enfermedades cardiovasculares (primera causa de mortalidad a nivel mundial), sino porque la AF en sí tiene grandísimo beneficios para la salud. Realizar AF de manera regular mejora la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria, la captación y metabolismo de la glucosa, la concentración, el patrón de sueño y el ánimo. Además disminuye el riesgo de depresión, de cáncer (seno, endometrio, colon y pulmón) y de recurrencia de caídas en población adulta mayor (3). En la Estrategia Mundial sobre Régimen Alimentario, Actividad Física y Salud (RAFS) la OMS, posiciona a la comunidad médica como importante gestor en la promoción de la AF regular y la alimentación saludable (4). Todo médico tiene el deber y la obligación de conocer el nivel de AF de sus pacientes para así motivarlos al cumplimiento de las recomendaciones mínimas internacionales de AF (150 minutos/semana de AF moderada o 75 minutos/semana de AF vigorosa además de ejercicios de fortalecimiento muscular dos veces por semana) (5 – 6). La AF regular provee más beneficios para la salud de las personas que ninguna otra intervención médica existente (7). Por tal motivo, todo paciente tiene derecho a recibir por parte de su médico el consejo de realizar AF de forma regular. En las últimas décadas se han implementado programas de consejería en AF en diferentes escenarios y ejecutadas por diferentes profesionales de la salud y ciencias del deporte (8).
