Coral reefs are ecosystems of great importance that provide a large number of services that benefit human beings, the environment and all the species that are related to them. In the study area, the area of the Tuxpan Lobos Reef System (SALT) and its surroundings, there are around 15 coral reefs. This area has a great influence on the hydrocarbon industry, because around the reefs, there are at least 7 oil platforms (active and inactive). Given this problem, this document designs and proposes a methodology to assess the vulnerability of the 15 reefs to a light crude oil spill. Defining vulnerability based on two elements: sensitivity and risk, for which the three concepts were evaluated. The general methodology to evaluate the three indices consisted of: understanding the concepts, investigating the scientific basis of the phenomena, identifying the variables (quantitative and qualitative) of relevance, collecting the necessary information, building a matrix for the evaluation, evaluating the reefs and organize the information on a map. Most of the reefs evaluated present a relative sensitivity from medium to very high, given the species present in them. Regarding the risk, given the proximity of the reefs to the oil platforms, even if some are protected by the SALT, they are at risk. In addition, some high and very high risk reefs were identified that are not protected, as is the case of Blake. Therefore, it is considered that the regulations must be updated, where the species in the threatened category are recognized and the reefs where they are found are protected, as mentioned in the international treaties and conventions in which Mexico participates and with which it has responsibility
