Resumen
Pterygium is an alteration characterized by the abnormal proliferation of the conjunctive tissue, in some people it can grow to the point off affecting the visual axis. It has been considered by different authors like a neoplastic injury because it has some characteristics like tumor tissues. It was carried out a systematic review of scien-tific articles with molecular evidences that supports the proposal showed by Clear et al, about the association between the disease and neoplasias, based on researches in the genes p53, p21 and COX-2, whose polymorphisms have been related with the presence of tumors, and also they have been identified in patients with pterygium
