Abstract— our society is immersed in a state of constant change triggered by the economic crisis and technological and scientific development, it produces the need to change the way the education system takes this challenge and contributes to educate people prepared to face it. This scenario has led some universities and engineering schools undertake changes to improve their academic processes professionals looking to form closer to the design and innovation oriented training. This study aimed to identify and analyze the design approach and innovation in engineering programs in a group of leading universities in the region of Valle del Cauca, for this was key to perform a content analysis which was carried out 29 programs engineering brought together in four engineering schools belonging to institutionally accredited universities in the region. In the study an analysis of the design and innovation are being appropriated by universities in the region of Valle del Cauca was performed and reflections regarding how they should be included to ensure oriented know meet the challenges of formation today arise.
