Resumen
The independence of New Granada in 1810 tried to end the period of colonial Spanish dominance. After the emancipation process the economy did not grow optimally, however , there is no consensus either on the magnitude or the causes of stagnation , for example, Alejandra Irigoin concludes that in the years after 1810, the nascent republic show a low growth, even if according to the period and the conditions existing. On the other hand, Prados states that post-Independence events left more costs than benefits from the implementation of inefficient economic models. It should be emphasized that both authors are agree that, after independence, the republic found itself in an unfavorable economic and social situation.
The purpose of this research work is to analyze the behavior of the Colombian economy after independence, based on the analysis of the production and distribution of tobacco between 1744 and 1850 and it had in count the checks made by the above-mentioned authors. This work try to determine which argument is more appropriate with the situation that the country live in this period. The main reason for taking this product as a reference is its impact during the colonial domain and for its commercial importance after independence.
Based on the literature review, it is inferred that the independence process left an economic and social deficit, but tobacco was a product that generated big income to the country during the Spanish colony and in later years of 1810, due to the recollection of income for its production, that is the presented economic growth according to the scenario present in the years after the independence, as Irigoin manifests it.
