Resumen
Introduction: Fractures of the hand correspond to approximately 8% of all fractures of the body; the most frequent being those associated with the scaphoid and other bones of the proximal carpal row. However, distal carpal bone fractures are less frequent, so their description and treatment are important. Objective: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, as well as to explore associations between these characteristics with pain and postoperative functionality of the hand in a Colombian Population Methodology: Cross-sectional study. Adults with subtypes I, II, and III hamate fracture were included. A descriptive and bivariate exploratory statistical analysis was performed with parametric and non-parametric tests according to the characteristics of the population. Results: The sample consisted of a total of 43 patients where a 62.8% of the cases, the fracture of the hamate hook occurred in the left hand. In more than half of the cases there was an associated fracture, the most frequent being the radius fracture with 28%, followed by the scaphoid fracture with 14%. The average bone length was 21.9 mm. Conclusions: Whenever there is evidence of a fracture in the hand or wrist by means of a plain X-ray or when there is persistent pain in the hypothenar region in a population similar to the one studied, a computed axial tomography is recommended as a complementary study. Associated fractures and occult injuries can thus be ruled out.
