Resumen
This research aims to cover the main aspects related to the reality of the Colombian coal market in order to search in Japan for the option of expanding the market in response to a palpable need for producers of this mineral to expand and open international markets. Colombia has traditionally been a country with considerable coal reserves at the Latin American level, however, the importance of coal is not given until the world energy crisis breaks out and international prices increase significantly. This fact oriented coal production towards large-scale mining and turns the country into a notable world exporter of coals, thus becoming an important and strategic resource for the economic development of the country. The world demand for Colombian Thermal Coal is mainly represented by the United States and Europe, the latter being the dominant market. Europe presents saturation in its imports translated into a slight reduction in its percentage share, going from 38% in 1996 to a projected 31% in 2001.
