Resumen
The maxillofacial complex is composed of three systems that have a normal development potential: the skeletal system, the muscular system and the dental system. When there is no alteration in the development of these systems, we have a functionally balanced occlusion. Non-physiological oral habits can be considered as interference in development, because they alter the normal orofacial formation, producing dento-skeletal deformations that trigger malocclusion. Malocclusion can occur from the earliest age when this balance of the structures of the oral system is altered. Bearing in mind that there are in turn several genetic determinations that favor the development of malocclusions, as it occurs in the majority of patients with physical and mental disabilities, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
