El espacio de la Vrbs es el escenario de las obras de Marcial y Juvenal: de la vida en ella sacan inspiración. Marcial nos describe Roma de tal manera que de su mano podemos recorrerla. A Juvenal, en cambio, le interesa más el paisaje humano y moral que el físico. Pero la Vrbs es también la cosmópolis en la que se reúnen viajeros e inmigrantes procedentes de todas partes. La movilidad entre el centro y la periferia se da en ambas direcciones y así aparece representada en los dos autores; pero, mientras Marcial ve ventajas en el Imperio porque en todo su espacio se difunden sus libros y su fama inmortal, para Juvenal, el espacio imperial es casi siempre fuente de ansiedad y corrupción, porque de él vienen los inmigrantes que desplazan socialmente a los romanos y el lujo que los corrompe.The space of the Vrbs provides the scenario of the works of Martial and Juve- nal: the life they observed there served as inspiration.
