C. L. R. James, novelist, critic, political theorist, historian, sports writer, teacher, was born in Tunapuna Trinidad in 1901. He began writing early in his career, went to England in 1932 and helped form the Revolutionary Socialist League. He subsequently lived in the United States, Trinidad and Tobago and England. He forged strong links with Kwame Nkrumah and the Pan-Africanist movement and was also associated with Dr Eric Williams in the early years of the People's National Movement. He died in Britain in 1989
