La limitación sensorial en etapas tempranas de crecimiento de Drosophila melanogaster silvestre, afecta notoriamente la expresión de algunas proteínas que desempeñan un importante papel en procesos neuronales, tanto originarios como madurativos. Un ejemplo de ello, es la expresión de la proteína FMRP, la cual participa activamente en procesos de refinamiento, tales como la poda sináptica y establecimiento de conexiones funcionales, los cuales son requeridos para dar un máximo funcionamiento del cerebro, pues procesos de actividad mental superior, tales como el lenguaje y memoria se encuentran significativamente ligados a la expresión de FMRP. En la actualidad, se conoce la participación de FMRP en la regulación negativa de proteínas de función sináptica, sin embargo, no se comprende en su totalidad la posible dependencia de ésta con la estimulación sensorial.
