Resumen
This article approaches the perceptions that family businesses, experts, organizations, and associations
of the Valle de Aburrá (Colombia) have about protocol and family succession. The work is an exploratory
research that demonstrated that family businesses are afraid to make a family protocol, mainly due
to their ignorance on the subject. Thus, this article aims to make entrepreneurs, university students,
researchers, and society in general aware of the important role of family businesses in economic activity
and as generators of prosperity and employment. It also attempts to demonstrate thatthe family protocol
is an important tool for sustainability, continuity and formalization of family businesses.
