Resumen
In recent decades, the direct chill casting has remained semi-prominent position in
the processing of commercial aluminum alloys, especially in the production of
ingots. Therefore the research required to develop national industry to propose
viable technical solutions that improve productivity and competitiveness, which is
why part of this study was conducted at company facilities, IMASA ECKO.
During the investigation it carried out the analysis of direct chill casting system for
aluminum alloys and is carried out through three stages. The first tests were
conducted on the ground in the second reproduced the DC-casting system at
laboratory scale and the third system was simulated using a mathematical model.
In the first instance, based on tests conducted on the ground determined the
thermal stability of aluminum to be poured into the mold and solidification profile
during forming of the ingot. It also took a record of the cooling water temperature
and the information generated is calculated heat transfer from the solidifying
material in contact with the cooling system.
Also in the DC-casting laboratory scale determined heat transfer of bullion to the
cooling system.
In the simulation system, confirmed the results of the two previous stages. In
addition, different operating conditions imposed in order to establish process
improvements. Finally, it was found that reducing the dimensions of the mold
reduces the cooling water consumption substantially in the semi-casting process of
aluminum.
