Resumen
Residual stresses are produced by many different manufacturing processes they must be
considered and analyzed, in the design, manufacturing and fabrication stages. Because they can
cause mechanical fails or they can be used in benefit to the component.
Residual stresses are generated by non homogeneous loads which are above the yield strength of
the material and they remain in the component even if the load that originated them is retired
They have the particular characteristic of being auto equilibrated, so they can be beneficial or
prejudicial to the element. There are different kinds of methods to measure residual stresses
depending on the nature of the stress to be measured, these methods can be divided in destructive
methods, semi destructive methods, and non destructive methods, and we can mention the
following as an example of some of these techniques: x ray, hole drilling method, ultrasound
method, Sachs method, etc.
In this research the residual stresses are analyzed in solid and hollow cylindrical elements subject
to torsion loads by analytical methods (mechanical theory), and numerical methods (finite
element method), finding a very good similarity between the two methods. The finite element
method is used as a validation method to the results founded in the analytical method so the
results can be observed and compared. These results could be used as background to similar
researches.
