Resumen
The effect of particulate organic matter (POM) and Tetraselmis sp. on growth and survival in the early life history of the northern anchovy Engraulis mordax was tested. Results show that the larvae do use organic foam (POM) as a food source. The growth ration was greater of larvae fed on POM as food source that larvae fed on Tetraselmis sp. and these significative differences to the growth ratio larvae was shown in starvation conditions. It was also noted that POM's foam played an utmost role within the first days after reabsortion of the yolk-sac in the larvae, thus showing a great need for exogen feed to surpass the critical period (Marr, 1956).
