Resumen
Wear and fracture monitoring plays an important role in predicting the life time of the cutting tool, this has been studied by many researchers for a long period of time.
The wear of the cutting tool is a very important economic factor in the cutting of metals, so any improvement in the tool or work material that increases the tool life is beneficial.
This paper presents a way to determine the wear of a cutting tool with three edges which is commonly used in milling operations.
The wear suffered by the cutting tool is estimated directly using a laser displacement with characteristics of high resolution and sensitivity. The sensor measures the distance between the output of the light beam and the tool, using the principle of triangulation.
In order to carry out the measurements was designed a device to make turn the cutting tool while the sensor scanned a portion of the inserts, data obtained are used to generate graphs in polar coordinates, which help to visualize the condition of the tool, after scanning a part the sensor is moved to another point on the vertical axis to perform the same scanning operation, finally with all data collected will make a 3D point cloud and proceeds to compare the values obtained from measurements in each of the points before and after wear.
This technique allows quantifying the wear of the tool with an accuracy and precision of less than one micrometer, while the tool is rotating.
