Resumen
Late in the nineteenth century, Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer developed a method called
catharsis, which aimed to eliminate the symptoms that cause emotional and physical discomfort
of people suffering from hysteria. Freud would make further changes, thus being established the
Free Association, method of intervention in which rests the whole psychoanalytic theory, a
school of thought that has had great influence on the science of human behavior and
understanding of man relationship with his culture and society.
The thesis problematizes the role of Free Association as a method in the formation of this
theory. The investigation follow aspect are presented: the results of historical research on the
beginnings of psychoanalysis as current psychological; the analysis of the nature of man from
the Freudian discourse and the role of method in the creation, development and consolidation of
psychoanalysis.
