Introduction: Hypertensive crisis is one of the major acute complications of hypertension, for management of multiple drugs is required as urapidil, enalaprilat and nicardipine, among others.
Objective: Determine the treatment used in hypertensive crisis in the emergency department of HGR No. 1, IMSS, Querétaro.
Material and Methods: A descriptive study, which included a review of 143 cases of patients of both sexes, aged 16, admitted to the emergency room of HGR No.1, IMSS, Querétaro, in the period of April to July 2010, with blood pressure above 180/110. Is a non-probability sampling for quota. Ethical aspects were considered and the regulation of health research. The information was collected in a purpose-built instrument, four questions, the variables studied were age, sex, type of hypertensive crisis, treatment used. The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics (percentages, frequencies, averages) using the statistical package SPSS 18. Results: The mean age was 54.16 ± 18.27 (22-81), males predominated in 62.2% (89), the type of hypertensive crisis occurs more frequently in hypertensive emergency was 81.1% (116), of them 76.7% (89) were treated with captopril, oral. Hypertensive emergencies occurred in 18.89% (27), they were managed in 70.3% (19) with intravenous isosorbide.
Conclusions: The treatment used for hypertensive emergencies, coincides with what is suggested in clinical guidelines, is not the case for hypertensive emergencies, wherein the isosorbide is the main drug used, although not the drug of choice.
