Resumen
INTRODUCTION. Studies of centenarians are rare in gerontological research, but interest in this area has increased over the past 20 years. Recently studies have been conducted in the United States, Japan, Sweden, Germany and Italy. These studies have provided an empirical basis for the formulations of hypotheses to be validated among populations of centenarians. The centenarian population studies have identified certain characteristics associated with extreme longevity related to dietary habits, marital status, factors related to personality and motivation, family and social support network and education, all related to successful aging.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of patients requiring medical care centenarians in the Regional Hospital Adolfo López Mateos.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We designed a descriptive, observational, exploratory, basic, open and prospective, which included patients aged 100 years or older treated at the Regional Hospital Adolfo López Mateos, a convenience sample of 12 cases were analyzed from a holistic perspective and comprehensive evaluation of the functionality in different stages of their disease.
RESULTS: We entered in the analysis of cases to 12 patients with a mean age of 102 meetings, with a maximum age of 107 years and a minimum of 100, 50% male and 50% female patients. The most prevalent reason for admission in the centenarian population analyzed was the delirium with 66% representing 8 patients, 58% of centenarians presented as a cause of delirium infections, with greater prevalence for urinary tract infection 33%, followed by pneumonia (25%). The geriatric syndromes more frequently in centenarians are delirium, cognitive impairment and sensory deprivation. The leading cause of death was pneumonia (75%).
CONCLUSIONS: Centenarians are the expression of exceptional longevity and for their understanding are necessary assessments from previous stages, establishing the function status indicators that allow analysis of different variables, therefore the implementation of Clinical Assessment in extreme ages (nonagenarians / centenarians) in the context of a specialized center like ours, will develop research in the field of longevity where demographic parameters are established, as well as the clinical features of the patients in these stages of life, because our country is lacking in such information.
