Resumen
Oral mucositis is the most common complication of bone marrow transplantation. The
clinical characteristics include pain, edema, ulceration and pseudo membrane formation.
There are many mucositis control measures, but few protocols or routines for their execution.
This study aimed to analyze the knowledge and practices of health professionals from Bone
Marrow Transplantation Center of University Hospital of Santa Maria about these measures.
Five professionals were interviewed, 4 nurses and 1 medicine doctor. The interviews were
interpreted from Bardin’s Content Analysis method, which allowed the creation of 3
categories that revealed that the most adopted measure was the chamomile tea and cold saline
solution, both used as mouthwash. Also were reported the use of local anesthetics, oral
hygiene and Leucovorin® mouthwash. It was observed that there is no systematization for
these measures, thus the nurses execute them in many ways. About the solvability of the
measures, the interviewed subjects reported that they are only comfort measures, not treating
mucositis. From statement analysis, it was possible to recommend a systematization of the
existent measures, as well as the use of Low Level Laser Therapy on the control of mucositis.
