The impact caused by the emission of carbon dioxide, coupled with the need to improve urban mobility, made it necessary to search for alternative means of locomotion. Concurrently with this, the use of bicycles has grown and proved effective in solving the major transportation problems in large urban centers. The great advance of power electronics, coupled with the search for new means of locomotion, has made possible the development of new solutions in order to make electric bicycles a viable option. Electric bikes can be basically defined as a bicycle driven by an electric motor, and it is already notable the existence of standards in order to define and regulate this bicycle model in many countries around the globe. It will be verified in this work that the bicycles can be built with different types of motors, where among them is the BLDC motor, object focus of this work. The rules governing electric bicycles around the world will be presented and studies of the BLDC engines, their construction methods, their mathematical modeling, their mode of operation, focusing on the six-step control and finally a BLDC engine will be studied for use in the construction of a prototype of an electric bicycle.
