Knowledge has an important role in promoting the development of countries and stimulates the improvement of people's life quality. In Brazil, the main place where someone can produce and disseminate knowledge is the university. These institutions have explicitly in their institutional philosophies the mission to train professionals, to generate and to disseminate scientific, technological and cultural knowledge. The relevance from produced and disseminated knowledge in universities is guided by an efficient, effective and efficient management. From this view, the management for sustainability has the purpose to contribute for quality of higher education through the inseparable development from teaching, research and extension permeated by the dimensions of sustainability. However, it is observed that studies about systems, techniques and management tools for sustainability of knowledge in universities are still incipient. Therefore, the objective of this research was to develop a modeling of a management system for the sustainability of knowledge in universities. The design pilot model was developed for the campus Palmeira das Missões, from the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. The study was conducted in the Gabinete de Projetos (GAP) of that teaching unit, once the produced knowledge at the university study object is formalized through projects and its products (publications, patents, lectures, etc.). The modeling of survey was constructed by defining the dimensions of sustainability and their analysis criteria. The dimensions chosen according to the characteristics of the system to be analyzed were: Environmental, Economic, Social, Cultural, Territorial and Management Competence. Modeling research integrated three modules: the mapping of the development project process in the unit (Motivation, Preparation, Registration, Enforcement, Evaluation and Dissemination); the evaluation of dissemination levels from the produced knowledge (high, medium, low and very low); and the evaluation from sustainability of knowledge dimensions. In order to implement the modeling, it was proposed a plan which covers five phases. From operationalization of modules from the management system, it was identified some critical factors. In mapping the development of projects, it was found problematic variables, especially in the stages of Preparation, Registration, Implementation and Evaluation. The dissemination of scientific production was ranked as Low, once that the most part was published in Conferences, Symposiums and Seminars, just prioritizing the scientific community. In relation to the sustainability of knowledge, it was found that most projects are in accordance to the established criteria, however, some issues need to be reassessed, especially in relation to the Competence Management dimension and the Environmental dimension. From the resulting diagnosis of modeling proposals, it was built purposes for sustainability management of the produced knowledge in the researched institution. This study contributes to instigate a reflection about the academic productivism and the need to qualify the knowledge produced in universities.
