A visão dos sujeitos internados em uma unidade de oncologia sobre o tratamento da dor: aspectos nutricionais e alimentares

The present research resulted from the experience of two years of work in a Multiprofessional
Residency Program in the Public Health System with emphasis on Hemato-Oncology and derives
from an exploratory research, in the descriptive field and with a qualitative approach that aimed to
understand how the treatment of pain in the context of oncology, and more specifically the relationship
of pain with the use of alternative food route, dietary intake orally and impact on nutritional status
from the point of view of hospitalized subjects. The research was developed from September to
November 2018, and eight subjects (six men and two women) were interviewed. For the information
collection, an instrument was used consisting of 29 open questions, including the use of the Visual
Analog Pain Scale (VAS), field diary and the proposal that the subjects represent their pain through
drawing. Regarding nutrition and food issues, the importance of food in the social context, with
involvement in the occupations of these people, the process of illness interfering with food intake and
food as a clear objective cause of pain is discussed. From the study, it is considered important to
incorporate the use of the VAS pain scale into the routine of the service in question, as well as the
questioning of pain and conduct focused on the subject in question. Also to determine practical
improvements not only in relation to nutritional therapy, but the quality of life offered to them.
