Resumen
Medicines used during the chemotherapy treatment can cause hearing disorders.
This study aimed to accomplish a retrospective analysis of the handbooks of
oncologic patients assisted at Center of Treatment of the Child with Cancer
(CTCriaC) for audiological monitoring. The handbooks of the patients in attendance
in the CTCriaC had been used, during the months of September to the November of
2006. To participate in the research the patients’ handbooks should assist the
following criteria: to accomplish chemotherapy; to do use, or not, of ototoxic
medicines; without concomitant radiotherapy and chemotherapy; pediatric or adult
patients. The sample of this study constituted 25 handbooks of individuals with ages
between 1 and 53 years old. The data were analyzed for following aspects: age, sex,
the cancer (CA) classification, time that presents the disease, used medicines, time
of chemotherapy treatment, associated diseases, accomplishment of
otorhinolaryngologic and audiologic evaluation and their results. For the information
obtained through the handbooks, it was accomplished a qualitative descriptive
analysis, frequency tables and crossed tables, with the objective of verifying
significant aspects to the research. The research verified the lack of audiologic and
otorhinolaryngologic attendance. Vincristina was the ototoxic medicine more used.
The type of CA of larger occurrence in the section was the Acute Lymphocytic
Leukemia. The time that the individuals presented the CA was of approximately 1
year and 4 months and the time of chemotherapy treatment of the patient was
around 11 months. It was also observed the presence of diseases associated to the
CA in the researched individuals. With the accomplishment of this study, the need
was verified of installing programs of audiological monitoring in the sections that
accomplish chemotherapy in oncologic patient, due to this treatment use ototoxic
medicines in several pathologies.
