The general aim of this work is to know how the publishing professional inserts himself in the editorial business market in Rio Grande do Sul. Two factors led to the choice of this theme, the paucity of research directed to this area and the personal motivation of the researcher in learning more about this market. It is a research with a inquired purpose that is divided on a bibliographic research about the professional profile of editor and a data survey that was done to show the real situation of the editorial business market in Rio Grande do Sul and how the editor does his work in it. To answer the guiding question, the research has revealed the performance of the editor along the history and the functions that he does in this activity. It has showed a publishing market with different purposes. And it has concluded that this market, which is opened to receive the graduated professionals in the Editorial Production course, valorizes these publishers that are capable to work with different medias, that like to read a lot and like that they do and have abilities to take part of the different stages of a book production.
