Resumen
This article aims to assess sodium intake and its association with hypertension
in the elderly in order to contribute to the planning of public health strategies.
Methodology: it was a transversal type of research with randomly selected
elderly people from both sexes. The variables which were analyzed were:
sociodemographic data, the body mass index (BMI), salt consumption and
hypertension. The data were processed by using an Excel spread sheet and
analyzed with the use of the SPSS statistical software. Results: Four hundred
and twenty four (424) old people were interviewed, with 68.4% being women
and 31.6% being men, whose average age was 70.8 ± 7.8 years old. Most of
them were married, had studied for less than 05 years and had month income
of up to 02 minimum wages. As for the BMI, the majority was overweight,
hypertensive and consumed more than 6g of salt a day. Conclusion: Bearing in
mind that hypertension is a public health problem, strategies to control it are
necessary, mainly prevention-like actions targeted to the modifiable risk factors
such as overweight control, decrease in the intake of salt and combat of
sedentary lifestyles.
