Resumen
This study aims to discuss the importance of the pharmacist in public health management, rescuing some of the story of National Drug Policy and Pharmaceutical Care, including Basic Care and the functioning mechanisms of the Unified Health System (SUS), and thus contribute to improvement of public health in our country. Through a bibliographic review, where it was approached in a narrative way, a virtual search in databases was developed, selecting articles about proposed theme. It is important to highlight the importance of the policies implemented in the SUS since the 1980s, aiming at integrality, equality of access and democratic management, among them the National Drug Policy and Pharmaceutical Care. Of paramount importance, the Pharmacist controls health actions demanded by a community, including the supply of medicines; conservation and quality control; safety and therapeutic efficacy, and monitoring and evaluation of use to ensure its rational use. There is also a great distance between the provisions in the legislation on pharmaceutical assistance and what is actually being understood by the managers and even the excipient presence of the professional in the Basic Health Units.
