This paper analyses the sustainability issue in a school environment and the possible effects on people involved in this process. It also indicators on how educational policies and official texts approach this subject and the role of the school board in implementing such integrating themes as sustainability. This paper presents a qualitative research, which uses semi-structured interviews to collect data from representatives of different school segments of two public schools in Santa Rosa – RS. From this research, it was found no familiarization with the term and no existing polices around the theme of sustainability in either of the schools, only related to environmental issues. Therefore, there were limitations with regards to understanding its meaning and importance in a school environment. Hence, it is possible to claim that there is room for improvement in working with the theme of sustainability in public school educational policies and leading documents of the educational process such as the National Basic Curriculum, the Pedagogic Project, as well as improve ownership and understanding of its concept, by teachers and others who are involved in the educational process.
