Resumen
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on acute physiological
response and physical performance at altitude. Nine male athletes of different modalities,
aged between 21 and 29 years, underwent two tests of maximal exercise in hypoxia (13% O2)
in the interval of a week, with caffeine intake (6 mg / kg body weight) or placebo. All
participants were kept "blind" with respect to the substance ingested. In the tests was
measured: - heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), blood lactate (LA), perceived effort (RPE),
velocity, time and distance running on the treadmill. The comparison between tests with
caffeine and placebo for the variables HR, BP, LA and SES, showed no statistically
significant difference (p> 0.05). The time and distance traveled was significantly higher (p
<0.05) in caffeine intake. It was concluded that caffeine increases the running performance
under acute exposure to altitude.
