Resumen
Metal ion dysregulation or accumulation has been implicated in a number of diseases. As such, a rise in the search for potential therapeutic compounds that can attenuate the toxicity exerted by the accumulation of such metal ions has been an area of research targeted in medicine. To aid in this effort, the establishment of an easy to use and cost-effective screening assay would be advantageous in order to assess the ability of a wide range of compounds for their metal-chelating ability. In this report, a well-established and sensitive method for the detection of Cu in solution was adapted into an assay to determine the Cu-binding potency of clinically important polyphenols (e .g. (-)-epigallocatechin-3- gallate (EGCG), resveratrol, clioquinol and baicalein). These compounds were chosen to establish this proof-ofconcept technique as a viable method for later use with newly discovered natural polyphenols or novel synthetic compounds that show potential in AD therapy as a metal-chelator.
