Objective: To determine the degree of adherence to treatment and its influence on efficiency of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to determine the patient's knowledge about the action of drugs and the perception of the importance of these for improving their health. Methods: Among the actions carried out at the time of assistance by the staff of the multidisciplinary residence, made by a pharmacist, nutritionist and physiotherapist, a questionnaire was administered to the Adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment Evaluation (CEAT-VIT, Portuguese version), and evaluated the result 50 viral load of HIV patients receiving HAART at least six months. Results: The degree of adherence to treatment was found to be good or strict in most patients (82%) patients, independent of the control of viral load. Among subjects with detectable viral load, 54% reported having regular knowledge of the action and importance of the drug to control their disease, most realized the benefits of the drug and its relationship with the improvement in her health. Conclusion: despite the difficulty inherent to existing treatment for chronic diseases, patients, when properly oriented show motivation for treatment, as demonstrated by good compliance rate found.
