Resumen
The psychiatric reformation had the purpose of ending the old manicomial models. Since then, people that suffer from mental disorders have a therapeutic treatment with social interaction and citizenship rescue goals. The Psychosocial Attention Centers (PAC) present a specific structure for this new era in mental health. The Physical Education Professionals are very important in this context, since they provide by their profession, life quality to the users in treatment, besides other benefits. Thus, the
purpose of this study was to describe the reality of the Physical Education professionals from a city in the south of Brazil focusing in the PACS, from their professional formation to the work market. The study population was composed by the PACS coordinators, the Physical Education Undergraduate Course coordinators and the students of the 6th semester of these courses. The instruments used were an structured interview with the PACS coordinators and a questionnaire for the students. The Political Projects of the courses were given by the courses’ coordinators so that some subjects indicated by the
students as related to public/mental health could be analyzed. The data analysis was done with the category work proposed by Minayo. It was concluded that the Physical Education professionals have little representation within the PACS and that there is a lack of knowledge and interest about public health by the students.
