Resumen
Documents appraisal is an essential activity in records management, it is an archivistic
function that is responsible to identify values to the documents, aiming to establish retention
period or disposal term for the documentation, because it would not be possible to keep
everything, on the one hand because the difficulties to find a document in a very large mass of
documents and, on the other hand, by the lack of physical space availability itself. The Higher
Education Institutions are also facing the problems generated by the continuous increase of
documents, especially in public institutions. In this way, the present research aimed at
investigating the policies related to documents appraisal in public institutions of Higher
Education at Florianópolis – SC, as well as to characterize the profile of the professional that
are responsible by the archives at the studied institutions and also, to verify the appliance of
public archivistic policies. To do so, we carried out a descriptive study with a qualitative
approach where, with the appliance of a questionnaire, we collected data from three Higher
Education institutions. The data was analyzed, considering a literature review and the
Brazilian Archivistic Law regarding the documents appraisal at state and federal levels. The
findings highlighted different realities at the three institutions and, from this situation some
considerations and recommendations were made.
