dc.description.abstractThe liver is an organ that performs many important metabolic functions. The diseases that affect its influence almost the body's metabolism. Most primary liver diseases in dogs are chronic, and its manifestations usually occur when approximately 75% of liver function was affected. Thus, in most cases, the diagnosis is delayed it inhibits the healing and one can just maintain the patient. In such cases the clinician must to prioritize quality of life of patients with liver disease for survival. When there are chances of cure, it is important to take quick and appropriate decisions in approach of disease, to cure the illness before the irreversible liver injuries to install. To make this possible, it is necessary good knowledge about the range of factors involving the liver disease, along with how to diagnose them from anamnestic data and clinical signals and appropriate exams. There are still many doubts and difficulties related to hepatobiliary disorders, since there is a lack of precise data about this issue in veterinary medicine. Aiming to bring knowledge, this text discusses, in general, currently available data on chronic liver diseases in dogs.
