This work has as focus the availabilization of the tools of the archival description in digital
environment. It is a exploratory study based on bibliographical survey technique and on the
search for examples. Publications about the research problems were identified and acquired,
being read and analyzed critically. Also was made the book report of the contents studied,
followed by search of the disclosure practices of the descriptive tools on the web in the
nationwide.The main authors, principles and standards that underlying the study were
discussed in the Bibliographic Review. The search studies the genesis and the perspectives of
the description archivistic. It sets the view of the normatization of the description. It states that
the representation of collections in digital environment is made possible by building
standardized tools through description norms as well as by the use of metadata patterns. It
presents the Brazilian Norm of Archivistic Description (NOBRADE) and the Encoded
Archival Description EAD-DTD metadata format as the components that might be used
nationwide for the digital availabilization of descriptive tools. It verifies that the publication
in the web of such tools occurs by the adoption of free softwares, like the ICA-AtoM. It notes
that standardization and digital encoding of finding aid enable the creation and maintenance
of instruments with high quality, accessible and preservable simultaneously over time, besides
enable a greater diffusion of the archives to society. It presents the “Base Arch” of the Casa
de Oswaldo Cruz’ Archive as one of the successful experiments of digital representation of
collections at the national level.
