Resumen
The present research aims to understand the meaning attributed to secondary education by students living in the Lorenzi neighborhood, located in Santa Maria / RS, together investigate the proposals of the 8th Education Coordination to guarantee the access and permanence of these Lorenzi students / residents in High School. The research is qualitative and for the results to be satisfactory, we opted for the semi-structured interview. We interviewed students who completed their studies at E.M.E.F. CAIC "Luizinho de Grandi" during the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 and who are currently studying at the Luís Guilherme do Prado Veppo State Institute, both located in the South zone of Santa Maria / RS. The results show us that the sense attributed to High School is the opportunity to obtain greater knowledge and thus prepare them for life. The influence in relation to their educational choices, comes from the family, and therefore their social environment, has a weight in the permanence of these in the school. The role of the school for these students is significant and with that, it becomes meaningful, as they envision a better future with the knowledge acquired in these spaces and this condition may allow a transformation in their lives. The Educational Management, portrayed through the 8th CRE, showed that although there are laws that support the access and permanence of young people in High School, there is still little that they do to guarantee this right. It is evident, therefore, the need of the school together with its school community to reflect on the sense of the High School for its students. The participation of the subjects involved in the educational process is extremely important for us to have a quality and democratic education.
