Resumen
In cities, actions as soil movement, earthwork and an addition of human artifacts affect the chemical, physical and morphological soil characteristics. Soils altered resulting from man's actions have incited the attention of the scientific community in recent decades. In Brazil, of the greatest weaknesses in research about urban soils is the unclear definition concerning the main attributes to be surveyed, both in fieldwork and in laboratory analyzes to describe urban soil. In the light that knowledge, the aim of this research was to test a protocol for describing urban soils considering morphological, physical and chemical characteristics of 12 soils profiles of urban soils located inside the urban perimeter of Santa Maria-RS. As results, we find the importance of considering already conventional attributes to describe natural soils but further the need to appoint other attributes due to the specificities of the urban environment, among them the so-called - qualifiers. The suggested protocol requires the extensive morphological description in the field and include the soil collection for laboratory analysis.
