Resumen
It has been discussed a lot about the relationship between text and image in multimodal texts. In this research, we investigate how this interaction in dictionary happens. We selected the dictionary Oxford Wordpower: dictionary for learners of English to analyze the entries, in order to verify whether there is a complementary or a dependent relationship between images and text. The work is based on the theoretical studies of Kress and van Leeuwen (2006), Martinec and Salway (2005) about image and verbal text, and studies by Pontes (2003, 2009) about dictionaries. We noticed that the images in the dictionary perform two functions: as modifier, in relation to the entry, and as modified, in relation to the definition. We also realize that there is a complementary status and, in relation to the logical-semantic aspects, we are faced with expansion, explanation and extension between image and text.
