Although the concept of wisdom has been widely studied by experts on the fields of philosophy, religion and psychology, it still faces limitations regarding it definition and assessment. The main goal of the present article is to formulate a definition of wisdom that allows the design of an assessment of the concept as a managerial competency. The methodology that was used was the qualitative document analysis. Many texts about the history, the definitions, and the assessment of wisdom and competencies were analyzed giving light to the difference between wisdom and other constructs, and between general and managerial competencies; all this analysis lead to the definition of wisdom as a managerial competency. As a result was designed an instrument to assess wisdom as a managerial competency named SAPIENS-O. As scopes of this instrument we can identify the possibility to assess wisdom as a managerial competency, opening a new field of analysis to the term breaking the theoretical and empirical difficulties, and the possibility to assess wisdom in real contexts, such as organizations.
