Resumen
Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is defined as a genetic condition in which the cognitive pattern is mainly characterized by the presence of mild to moderate mental retardation, poor performance on tasks related to visuo-spatial functions and high performance in language functions. But today there isn’t a general agreement on the specific neuropsychological profile of this condition in view of the heterogeneous nature of clinical studies in previous research. The aim of this study is to conduct a neuropsychological assessment in a young female diagnosed with SWB, to explore the neuropsychological profile and have a better understanding of the cognitive manifestations of this condition. The study is developed taking into account the new paradigms of intellectual disability, seeking to highlight both weaknesses and strengths of people with this condition. The results obtained from the neuropsychological assessment consisted primarily of a preservation of the auditory attentional processes, an anterograde declarative memory in normal range, preserved comprehensive and spoken language, an intelligence quotient (IQ) at 72, with lower range, denoting limit intelligence, impaired visuo-spatial skills, and limitations in executive functions, mainly in planning and abstract reasoning. This would confirm some of the cognitive characteristics identified in previous studies.
